AdBlue® has become a standard part of running many modern diesel vehicles. From vans and HGVs to agricultural and commercial equipment, modern diesel engines now rely on AdBlue® technology to help reduce harmful exhaust emissions and meet strict Euro 6 environmental regulations.
But what actually is AdBlue®? Why does my vehicle need it? And what happens if I use the wrong product?
What is AdBlue®?
AdBlue or Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a clear, non-toxic solution made from 32.5% high-purity urea and 67.5% deionised water. It is not a fuel additive and it does not mix with diesel inside the fuel tank.
Instead, AdBlue® is stored in a separate tank within the vehicle and used as part of the exhaust after-treatment system.
The urea used in Licensed AdBlue® is manufactured to a very high purity standard. The water is also purified and demineralised to prevent contamination within the vehicle’s emissions system.
Although people often associate urea with fertiliser or even pig’s urine, the grade used in AdBlue® is far more refined and synthetically produced for automotive use.
How does AdBlue® work?
Modern diesel vehicles fitted with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology inject small amounts of AdBlue® into the exhaust system.
Once injected, the heat from the exhaust creates a chemical reaction that converts harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions into harmless nitrogen and water vapour before they leave the exhaust pipe.
This process helps significantly reduce air pollution and allows diesel engines to meet modern Euro emissions standards.
Why do diesel vehicles need AdBlue®?
Many modern diesel vehicles are designed to rely on AdBlue® as part of their emissions control system. Without it, the vehicle will normally display warning messages and may eventually enter reduced performance mode (limp mode) or refuse to restart once switched off.
This is designed to ensure the emissions system continues working correctly and the vehicle remains compliant with emissions regulations.
The amount of AdBlue® a vehicle uses depends on:
- Mileage
- Driving style
- Load weight
- Vehicle size
- Type of operation
For example, HGVs and high-mileage commercial fleets will naturally use more AdBlue® than smaller passenger vehicles.
Why using Licensed AdBlue® matters
Using poor-quality or contaminated AdBlue® can lead to expensive damage within the SCR system.
Because modern emissions systems are highly sensitive, the fluid must meet strict ISO 22241 standards to ensure purity and correct performance.
Low-quality products or incorrectly stored AdBlue® can contribute to:
- Crystallisation within the system
- Injector blockages
- Sensor faults
- Vehicle downtime
- Costly repairs

Does AdBlue® expire?
AdBlue® does have a shelf life. In most cases, it lasts around 12 months when stored correctly.
To maintain quality, AdBlue® should be:
- Stored out of direct sunlight
- Kept sealed when not in use
- Protected from contamination
- Stored between recommended temperatures
Extreme temperatures can affect the product quality over time.
What happens if you run out of AdBlue®?
Most vehicles will provide several warnings before the tank becomes empty.
If AdBlue® runs out completely:
- Engine performance may be restricted
- The vehicle may enter limp mode
- The engine may not restart after being switched off
Topping up before reaching this stage helps avoid unnecessary downtime and disruption.
AdBlue® and Low SAPS engine oil
Vehicles using AdBlue® and SCR systems also typically require Low SAPS engine oil.
Low SAPS oils are specially designed to reduce the amount of sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur entering the exhaust after-treatment system. Using the wrong engine oil can contribute to damage or reduced efficiency within emissions components.
