£300 Heating Support in Scotland: Help for Households Struggling With Heating Costs
Support for Scottish households struggling with the cost of heating oil and LPG has been extended, giving eligible households more time to access help with their heating costs.
The Scottish Emergency Heating Oil Scheme (SEHOS) was launched on 1 April to support low-income households facing higher prices for heating oil and LPG amid ongoing international uncertainty and instability in the Middle East.
The scheme was initially introduced for six months but has now been extended beyond its original period, allowing households that meet the eligibility criteria to continue applying for support over the winter and beyond.
Who can apply for SEHOS?
SEHOS is targeted at low-income households, including people receiving means-tested benefits. It is also available to households experiencing financial hardship and at risk of having to ration their fuel, where there are unavoidable heating needs.
More than 6,700 payments have already been made through the scheme.
Around 7% of Scottish households rely on heating oil or LPG, with rural and island communities particularly affected. An estimated 142,000 households use heating oil, while around 27,000 use LPG.
Help beyond heating costs
Alongside the extension of SEHOS, households are being encouraged to contact Home Energy Scotland for free and impartial advice.
Its advisers can help households reduce energy use and heating costs, improve energy efficiency, and explore funding for home improvements or cleaner heating systems.
Whether you’re a homeowner or tenant, advice is available on grants, loans, and other support that could help make your home warmer, more energy-efficient, and cheaper to run.
